It happens to the best of us.  You’re cruising along on the Internet when, out of nowhere, you’re suddenly at the mercy of a nasty virus or malware.  Sometimes you’re not even aware right away, leaving your data vulnerable to people you really don’t want having it.  While it may be a growing concern, there are things you can do to prevent that sick, sinking feeling before it’s too late.

Pay Attention To Signs

Sites like Google and Bing are often proactive in guarding your safety online.  They spend millions on the technology to display important warnings like the one seen below when a site is suspected of malicious activity.  They may not be right 100% of the time, but is it really worth the risk when whatever you’re looking for is likely available on a trusted site?

blocked

These generous warnings, however, are also not an excuse to let down your guard.  Always use common sense with anything you encounter online.  If it looks suspicious, think twice before clicking.  This rule applies doubly so when it comes to software found online.  Download from trusted sites and brands whenever possible.

Your Smartphone Is A Computer

It may be small, but that smartphone in your pocket is a computer.  As such, it is susceptible to many of the same issues a desktop or laptop computer can fall victim to.  More concerning is the idea that something so small, that travels with you constantly, can be forgotten or stolen in an instant. That said, it is surprising how many people fail to protect their smartphone, especially when it’s so easy.  The moment I knew it was an option, I downloaded an app on my iPhone that allows me to remotely lock or even completely wipe my iPhone in the event of loss or theft.  Last week, my wife was showing me the similar app she installed on her Android phone.  It’s not hours of entertainment, but it may be the single most important install one day.

Firewalls, Anti-Virus and Andti-Malware Software

It’s hard to buy a PC these days without a pre-configured firewall built in and running right out of the box.  The more advanced viruses, trojans, and malware become, the less you can rely on common sense alone.  I know because I have strict viewing, clicking, and downloading rules to prevent viruses and trojans and one day, I found myself with a trojan anyway.  Not a day has gone by since that I have been without anti-virus software.

Treat Your Computer Like Your Car

Imagine this.  Your close friend asks to borrow your car but you know he has crashed his own car countless times as a result of reckless driving.  Would you hand over the keys?  If you don’t mind the increased risk that you’ll be without the use of a car, go right ahead.  Apply this same thinking to your computer.  If your friend is constantly winding up with malware and trojans on his computer, the odds that he’ll put yours out of commission are certainly increased.  If you have kids, create their own account or accounts, with limited privileges, to help reduce the risk of something bad happening.

While I’ve been reviewing a lot of MAC software lately, I’ve been reminded by Cleverfiles about a must-have utility for any computer, data recovery software. I already had some great undelete software for my Windows box, but I was leaving my Mac at risk. Over the weekend, I downloaded Disk Drill PRO for a review and although the bar was set high by my Windows counterpart, this Mac file recovery program performed well.

(Disk Drill PRO recovers files I deleted for my testing)

Disk Drill PRO Features

The first thing that caught my eye was the simplicity. From the install to the informative tutorial to protecting and recovering files, everything was incredibly easy and the user interface is clean and quick to navigate. Of course, the tutorial helped get me up and running quickly. The ease of use actually somewhat hid the fact that Disk Drill PRO is loaded up with a lot of useful features, some of which are below:

– Live preview
– S.M.A.R.T. monitoring
– Attach non-mountable images for recovery
– Deep or quick scan
– Recover deleted files
– Back up disks and partitions to DMG images
– Available in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian
– Password protect your backups

Disk Drill Tutorial
(Above is one of nine tutorial screens loaded with usage information and tips)

Most people will find the need for backups and file recovery, which are a must, but this software wouldn’t be complete without the ability to deep scan and the complete views of all drives and partitions. The DMG options are nice, too, but I was really pleased to see the live preview. When you work with a ton of images, these become critical files to restore and it’s troubling to restore files for hours only to find out that 90% of them were incomplete. With the live preview, you can preview any image that will restore correctly.

One of the unique features of Disk Drill is its Recover Valut technology. I told it to protect my main drive, so now it keeps an inventory of sorts of my file information. Should I ever find the need to recover lost data, Recover Vault remembers the file names and other details. When I crashed a drive a couple years back, I wound up recovering about 60GB of music files all named File00xxxxx.mp3. While it’s nice to get the music back, without technology like Recover Vault, I spent weeks listening to music and renaming files in my free time.

Working with external or internal hard drives, memory cards, iPod etc., Disk Drill worked really fast and without fail. It comes in a free version with the PRO version boasting some advanced features and extras, namely HFS/HFS+, FAT, NTFS data recovery and priority support. Both versions get the Recover Vault, but only Disk Drill PRO allows you to rescue files which were deleted long ago and even after formatting.

While the free version is free, the PRO will run you $89 (15% off with the coupon code JETCHE-DD).

Conclusions

Disk Drill PRO’s $89 price tag is about $20 more than I paid for my PC software, but it’s a lot nicer, easier to use, and seems to boast more features. It’s built to be used quickly by just about anyone, but hopefully you’ll never actually need it. Although you’ll need to weigh the cost against your personal need for the added features, the free version should be a minimum requirement for any Mac owner.

Did you know that you could fix shaky video with simple software? I didn’t, but I hadn’t thought of it much, either. On the occasions that I wound up with video that shook all over the place, I just brushed it off. Looking back, I could have hunted down some video stabilization software and now that I know about Mercalli Easy Video Stabilizer for Windows, I see shaky video in a whole new way.

What is it and how does it work?

Video stabilization software takes a video file as input, analyzes it for motion imperfections, and does its best to output a video with those imperfections corrected as much as possible. In the case of Mercalli Easy Video Stabilizer, this entry-level solution makes stabilizing video as easy as drag-and-drop, wait, save. Mercalli also makes filters, effects, transitions, and software for more professional needs, but this is the solution for quick video correction at a low price.

How well did it perform?

For my tests, I dragged a kitten video into Mercalli Easy, watched it do its thing for a bit, and saved the results to my computer. My 15 second video took about 5 minutes to correct and save and my tests were performed on a 2.2GHz Pentium Dual-Core with 3GB of ram, which is somewhere between the minimum and recommended requirements. In my initial testing, I found some artifacts on the corrected video, but a quick email to support led me to some additional video codecs that eliminated those flaws from the subsequent test videos. The side effect of the video stabilization is the slight motion blur that appears as the video is moved around to off-set your shaky hand. This is, however, minimal and I’m not sure hoe much I would have noticed it if I was casually using the software for home videos. Regardless, it’s still a step up from the video I began with. Below is a short video showing my original video, the processing, and the final result.

The biggest feature here may be the ease of use. I don’t need to know all the technical details about what it’s doing any more than I need to know how my printer gets the ink onto the paper in the right shapes. With Mercalli Easy, the interface is simple and inviting, with a process to match, hiding most of the technical prowess under the hood. The $14.95 price tag and easy interface make it a great fit for occasional projects or general home use.

Conclusions

If you’re just throwing video on Facebook or sharing via email, don’t worry about shaky video. When you move up to more valued output, that’s when you want to look to software like this for stabilization whenever needed. For me, it’s anything I care enough about to take the time to edit. For about 15 bucks, it definitely beats a lot of video editor pricing, and did I mention the simplicity? Definitely a good buy for any frequent video editing, but for professional projects, don’t be afraid to spend a little more.
