A while back, I ditched Cydia and my jailbreak on my iPhone 4 (Verizon) for the bells and whistles promised by IOS 5. At the time, I thought about all the advantages of my jailbroken IOS and decided that the new features of IOS 5 outweighed the features I was actively using from being jailbroken. Then came Siri and this month, I learned that Siri was soon to be ported to jailbroken iPhones running IOS 5.0.1 and couldn’t wait to jailbreak again. This morning, the untethered IOS 5.0.1 jailbreak AND the Siri port (named Spire) are both available.
How To Jailbreak IOS 5.0.1 Untethered
First, make sure you have one of these supported devices:
- iPhone 4 (GSM – CDMA)
- iPhone 3GS
- iPod touch 4G
- iPod touch 3G
- iPad 1
You’ll also need to make sure you’re on IOS 5.0.1 If not, update your device now, because Apple is sure to release a new version soon to close up some open doors.
Got everything you need? Good, you’re ready to begin. Just follow these steps:
1. BACK UP – You don’t know how many times this has saved me. Do It!
2. Download Redsn0w 0.9.10b1 (Windows – Mac OS X).
3. Unzip the Redsn0w archive you downloaded and run Redsn0w 0.9.10.b1.
4. Click the button to Jailbreak and follow the on-screen instructions.
After a couple minutes and a reboot, you should be jailbroken. Props go out to pod2g for making it possible.
How To Install Siri On iPhone 4
Ryan Petrich and chpwn have released a port of Siri, called Spire, to Cydia. This is about 100MB, so you really should install via Wifi. To find it, just search for Spire in the BigBoss repository.
This is the best port of Siri to date, but it still requires authorization from Apple to run. This means that you have to find and use a proxy in order to use Siri (for now). For more information on how to get a proxy, see this post from cydiahelp.com.
Unbrick Your iPhone
Just like anyone, I can make mistakes. Sure enough, while trying to re-jailbreak my iPhone, I wound up turning it into a paper weight when I did something wrong and it wouldn’t boot up. If this happened to you, don’t worry because there’s hope. Sadly, it will take some time to restore and you may lose some settings, though. If your phone is stuck with error messages or won’t boot, you can start by doing a factory restore. This will reset the phone to the stock or latest IOS install. After this, you need to restore from your latest backup. You did make a backup, right? Once the backup is in place, you’re ready to jailbreak again. Good luck!
I’ve written before about how to jailbreak your iPhone in 15 minutes, under 10 minutes and even 60 seconds, but every time, a computer was needed to to the work. While I still suggest backing up your iPhone, which will need a computer, jailbreaking it can now be done right from the iPhone’s Mobile Safari web browser.
Jailbreaking your iPhone on IOS4 is easier than ever now. Thanks to some hard work by @comex, I just went to jailbreakme.com on my iphone and tapped the slider. It did all the work, and a minute later, I had Cydia up and running. That’s it.
The problem with a stock iPhone is that it (currently) lacks things like app folder support for apps, carrier unlocking, and some apps that Apple just won’t approve for one reason or another. This is why we jailbreak. It provides more freedom over your device, allowing you to install whatever you want, change the look, etc. It’s just a lot more fun, but until now, you couldn’t jailbreak the iPad or an iPhone running the 3.1.3 firmware. Welcome to Spirit. (note, this will not carrier-unlock your device)
How to Jailbreak
This is by far the easiest jailbreak I’ve done on my iPhone. Run a backup with iTunes before jailbreaking! You simply download Spirit for the PC or Mac, unzip, plug in your iPhone or iPad and run Spirit. You’ll see a small window with a button that reads, simply, “Jailbreak”. Click it and wait a few seconds. When done, it will reboot your device and you’re jailbroken. Here’s a short video showing the process on an iPad:

There are people who love technology and then there are people who love it so much that they can’t help but tweak and play and break and fix anything they get their hands on. I’m in that second group. After enjoying a fun night out with friends last night and a movie and lunch today, I got online to find that the jailbreak software for the iPhone 3G S had been released. I quickly downloaded it and after a couple small pitfalls, I now have a jailbroken and unlocked iPhone 3G S. Just check out these steps and the video right below them.
Here’s the basic steps required, but read the notes below before you begin:
1. Back up your iPhone!
2. Download purplera1n.
3. Run purplera1n.
4. Run Freeze.
5. Reboot.
6. Open Cydia and add the repo666.ultrasn0w.com source.
7. Install ultrasn0w.
Note 1: Freeze will say it’s done, but just sit there. You should close Freeze and reboot your iPhone to see Cydia.
Note 2: If you tried with vista and get stuck at “wait for reboot”, don’t worry. Just unplug your phone and hold down the power and home buttons at the same time for a few seconds. This will turn it off. Then plug it back in with iTunes open. iTunes will then ask you to restore your iPhone to factory settings. Let it do that and make sure it is installing 3.0, not 3.1. Next, restore from your backup. If you didn’t make a back, consider it a lesson learned. Always make a backup before stuff like this. Once it’s all restored, try again in compatibility mode.
