I have two sets of ear bud headphones that I use regularly. One set is grey and the other is black. While neither is ugly, I wouldn’t call them stylish, either. In fact, I had never really thought about the style of my buds as long as they sounded great. Then I got some Blue Graffiti Arts inner ear buds from chicBuds in the mail and saw something unique and artsy.
The Art Of Music
When my chicBuds Arts arrived, I knew two things before I even opened the package. First, it was clear to me that the allure of this product would have a lot more to do with the artistic flare of the buds than the sheer quality of sound they deliver. Second, these were no more MY buds than my wife’s car was. She actually needed a new set of ear buds and sure enough, she claimed them after determining that they met her criteria for ownership. What was that criteria? Well, they had to be cute, and according to her, they were “totally cute”. Check. They also needed to not hurt her ears, which she confirmed with the smallest set of gel tips. Check. Finally, they had to not sound too bad. Check.

When it comes to reviews, however, I had to judge for myself. While I like the art on these and the blue gel tips lead me to think these are the more male-themed of the three designs, I was more fond of the zebra designed buds (seen above right). If only the pink accents were a deep purple. As for the sound, I stole them back long enough to run some Tinie Tempah, Celldweller, Johnny Cash, and popoï sdioh through them to test a range of sounds. While testing, I went back and forth between my more expensive buds and the chicBuds and I noticed no difference, both providing great sound quality.
The Details
For those interested, here’s some of the technical details from the site:
â— In-ear buds include 3 gel tip sizes: XS, M, L
â— Driver Diameter: 7mm
â— Cable Length: 1.2 M
â— Frequency Response: 20-20 KHZ
â— Impedance: 16 ohms
â— Plug Type: 3.5 mm
Of course, to paint those artistic designs on the cables, the old rounded cables wouldn’t work. Instead, chicBuds used flat cables which also serve in keeping the buds from getting tangled every time they go in a pocket or purse.
Conclusions
These buds, while seemingly just a fashion accessory, proved themselves audibly as well, delivering great sound throughout my tests. At $30 a pair, they would not normally be a purchase if you just want a decent pair of headphones that deliver acceptable sound quality, but that price is keyed right in for those seeking a little style with their sound. chicBuds are also more suited for a graduation or birthday gift than just a purchase for yourself.
Everyone has gifts and talents. You should explore other things. I want to be a rock star but I cannot sing or play instruments so I have to find something else.
