Keep Surfaces Cleaner with Surface

Posted in Computers, reviews by Joe Tech on the April 13th, 2009

You’ve probably heard of a company called Audiovox before. Chances are that you’ve used one of their products before or know someone who has. They have a relatively new product on the market and a while back, they noted that a lot of shiny gadgets pass through my hands, so they asked me to try this product out. It’s called Surface and it is named after what it is intended to help you clean.

Surface cleaner

About the product
IMG_2298Surface is a cleaning solution that comes with a microfiber cloth to help you get fingerprints and dust off of the surfaces of all those shiny devices you use. If you’re like me, that’s a lot of surfaces collecting a lot of smudges and prints. Right on the packaging, it says it’s good for cleaning TVs, remotes, computers, laptops, game gear, GPS devices, cell phones, cameras, MP3 players, protable video devices, eyewear, and more. It’s a well-packaged product, too. Rather than the common round bottle, Surface has more of a futuristic look to it, from the black and silver colors to the curvy caps, right down to the logo. It looks more like a cologne packaging. Proving that they’re at least somewhat web savvy, they’ve included the logo on the front and remembering that most people lose or throw away instructions, they’ve printed them all on the back of the container, itself. If you noticed, I wrote “caps” above. I was referring to the cap on top that covers the spray nozzle, of course, but there’s a bottom cap, too. The bottom cap contains the microfiber cloth for cleaning. The bottom cap also has two small ventilation holes in it to let the potentially damp cloth dry out while stored. This product has obviously been thought through and whoever was in charge of usability and design should get a raise.

Putting it to the test
I have to make a confession here. I use my shirt to clean surfaces. It’s always there and it does ok, sometimes. I shouldn’t do that because on top of dirtying up my shirt, I run the risk of scratching my lens or glasses or screen. With a product like this, I can clean my surfaces properly and get them a lot cleaner, too. As an iPhone user, my phone was something I was eager to get cleaned up with this product. The results look pretty good, below.

While the photos give you a decent idea of how well it works, I tested it on more items as well. A few of my tests can be seen in the video below. I had to cut some of it out to keep the video from being far too long, but if you watch the iPhone cleaning in the video, you can see a really clear shot of how reflective my phone’s surface became after cleaning. In fact, I had to set my camera to manual focus for the “AFTER” shot above because it kept trying to focus on the ceiling that was being reflected off the iPhone’s surface.

Notes and conclusions
Best Buy has Surface priced at $9.99 online and I’m sure it’s priced similarly elsewhere. Using a couple sprays to clean a small surface, this 2oz bottle should last quite a while. The whole this is self-contained, so you don’t have to worry about remembering how many sprays it was or losing the cloth. It looks good, and works well and comes at a decent price.

I swear, (and I shouldn’t) I am not just saying this cuz you are an online friend, but I am thrilled to know such a product exists. My shiny stuff gets smudges on them too and yet I don’t want to ruin them either. You have done us all a good turn by telling us about this product Joe. I’ll find some to buy ASAP. Thanks!

Carol: I know you can get some at Best Buy or BestBuy.com. The surface site also lists some places to find it. Thanks for the enthusiastic comment, too!
