To be fair, he was peeing on the storage shed outside my house. Remember yesterday, when I posted the Archerfish surveillance system review? I included a video showing a guy peeing on my storage shed door, but the lighting out there is no good. The Archerfish system gave me a great first line of defense, providing me with proof that it was a person (not just a large dog), a general build of the guy, and more importantly, a good timeline. Now I just needed a good photo of him to go with it. This morning, at about 3:30 AM, I got my photo.

Caught peeing!

It’s not the best photo, but I’m working on cleaning it up and his face is burned into my memory. If I see him again, I’ll know. This guy has been peeing on our storage shed door for months, and it’s been happening more lately. About a week ago, I noticed the same thing happening to one of my new neighbors. After such a long time, we finally got the video with the help of Archerfish and filed a police report. Without some way to ID the guy, though, we couldn’t officially do anything. More importantly, he didn’t know he was caught and would surely keep coming back. That’s when my wife and I put together a plan to get the guy’s face on film while also letting him know he was busted. We didn’t know if he was bigger than me or if he’d try to fight my camera away or what. More concerning to me was the idea that he would walk by, do nothing wrong this time, and see me standing there with a camera. I didn’t want to tip him off before getting my photo and my chance to confront him. So we came up with a (hopefully) solid plan.

We took a nap, woke up at 2:30 and headed outside. I armed myself with my Canon Rebel XTi DSLR, a Pure Digital Flip Ultra video camera, my phone, and my LED Lenser flashlight and jumped in the back seat of the car. I rolled the back window half way down so I could get a good photo and stayed low. I was in a pretty uncomfortable position for about 45 minutes, but I was ready to pounce if he came by. Luckily, he dropped by, as expected, and walked toward me, between my wife’s car and the storage shed. For a second, I was certain he saw me because he turned and looked right at me. Then, he proceeded to urinate on my storage shed door as he had done many times. I sat up, pointed the camera out the window, and fired off a shot to get his attention (the flash was on, of course). He turned to face me, and the look on his face as the second picture snapped was priceless. Though it was a split second, it seemed like a long time that he sat there dazed before I said “don’t come back”, which was his cue to take off. I jumped in the front seat, started the car, and followed. I saw a silver truck pull out quickly and as I followed it, it sped up, eventually losing me in the neighborhood when I stopped to grab my phone.

After months of wondering and then worrying that I might never catch this guy, I finally got him! The best part is that he looked ashamed and scared that he got caught. I have a feeling he won’t be coming back. I’ll leave you with this video recap of what Archerfish confirmed was happening regularly outside my home.

I’d love to have a name for this guy, so if you recognize him, email joe@joetech.com.

  1. Oh my god, how awesome that you caught him, not only on tape, but also on a much better picture! This was a great post. Sorry that he peed at your house, but this was really exciting and fun to read :)

Any idea WHY he would pee there? It doesn’t make any sense, maybe he has a grudge against your neighourhood or he has some mental issues?

I hope you’ll update us if anything else happens in this case.

  2. Reel and Klaus: The theory I’m running with at the moment is that he goes for a morning jog, ends it at my place (I’m in a back corner of the complex) and pees there because it’s dark enough and he has some cover from the car.

We’ll have a motion sensor light up by the weekend.

  3. Can you not get sued for posting his picture online, by the way?

I remember a case in Denmark where a company got robbed, they posted their surveilance video online so everybody could see the thiefs. The company were dragged to court and lost due to some “privacy issues” by posting the thiefs face online… crazy. But we wouldn’t want you to get in trouble :)

PS: Your CommentLuv doesn’t seem to be working – doesn’t load anything.

PPS: I *really* miss some kind of feature to email commentators when there’s a new comment/reply to a post :) I have to keep a tab open with this post and refresh it every now and then to remember to check for your reply, as I can’t receive an email about it. Let me know if you’d like suggestions on a plugin that can do it for you.

  4. Klaus: 1) As far as I’m concerned, if someone pees on my house over and over again, they can expect to go online and find a photo of themselves doing it. If he did try to sue me for it, I’d at least have his information to give the police for indecent exposure, etc. It would have to be more stupid than what he got caught doing in the first place.

    2) I’ll look at the commentluv thing.. thanks for the heads up

    3) I really need a good comment notification plugin. I’ll have to hunt for one this week.

  5. That is awesome! I love the planning that went into setting up the catch! I live quite close to a university and every Tuesday and Thursday night I get woken at about 4am by youngsters going home drunk. The worst thats happened so far is a few pickets getting kicked off my fence…annoying but I’ve come to live with it now…

  6. Wow. Did you “piss” someone off? Why on earth would he keep coming back to the same spot and why the door as opposed to the wall or a bush? It’s like he was purposely pissing on your door so you’d have to touch it or something. There’s a lot of crazy people out there.

  7. Shaun: A friend (who didn’t know the whole story) asked what the big fuss was about, and of course it’s that the guy kept doing it for months. If it was once I would have been a little annoyed, but I would have forgotten about it pretty quickly, too.

    usws: I sure hope not.

Ed: I may never know, but I have a feeling it’ll stop now, at least.

  8. Crazy. He does this often? You could electrify his urinal, or post the picture up all over the neighborhood.

If you would rather not get sued, you could try is putting up a scarecrow. Next time he goes there to pee, it will pee on him!

  9. Zog: I have a feeling he’s not coming back. If he’s let’s it stay in the past, I’ll do the same, but if he comes back, I have a number of possibilities lined up.

  10. That’s creepy reminds me of the time i was on the LA Metro bus and this lady in front of me pulled down her pants and pissed right there on the bus. Gross!

  11. Did you get his license plate number? That would be good info to provide the police.

I hope he doesn’t come back. But if he does, if this is your private property, you might want to scare him by showing a firearm and verbally telling him that he’s trespassing.

  12. Gloria: I’ll bet that was fun to watch. Yeah. It’s an eerie feeling having to hide out and wait until I can hear a guy peeing on my door to pop up and take a picture of him. It’s something I hope not to have to do again.

Wes: I didn’t get a plate number. If he comes back, I have something lined up. =)

  13. Yeah i was not happy i had my six month old daughter on my lap. We were going to the store to get her an outfit to wear to her dads graduation ceremony from basic training. I was pissed *no pun intended* and the weird thing is that she seemed ordinary she had on scrubs like maybe she worked in a hospital or clinic. I think she ended up getting arrested after i got off.

  14. Found this post doing some research on home security systems. If this does not convince me to spring for a video surveillance system I cannot imagine what would. Great story.

  15. This is the perfect scenerio for using video surveillance. Glad to hear you had a successful experience catching this guy in the act!
