I buy and sell domains from time to time. I’ve been a GoDaddy customer for a long time. Most of my clients are GoDaddy customers as well. As such, I often have a need to call GoDaddy for support.
For at least a few years, the ONLY hold music seems to be the looping album, Hot by Squirrel Nut Zippers. I have been a SNZ fan for quite some time, so when I first heard it, I was happy about it and even when I’ve been on hold for over an hour (which was a rare once or twice), I didn’t mind listening at all. It’s a great album if you’re into that kind of music.
Today, I had to call again and in my short time on hold, I was able to listen to most of track 11, Blue Angel. It was just after I got off the phone that I began to wonder a few things:
1. Will there ever be anything else playing when on hold with GoDaddy? Not that I mind SNZ. You can keep playing that forever as far as I’m concerned.
2. Are the Squirrel Nut Zippers being payed handsomely for the past few years of hold time, or are they just appreciative of the free publicity and just enjoying it (as I hope they are)?
3. How about an autographed 8×10 of Candice Michelle mentioning how much she’s in love with Joe Tech? Hey. I have to try, right?

Haha nice entry. I’ve noticed the exact same thing when I’ve called over there.
I’m actually really impressed with GoDaddy’s customer service. I love the follow-up calls after purchases.
Have you had much luck selling domains? I’ve got a bunch on Sedo, but haven’t had any takers so far.

Ryan: Thanks. I get kind of sporadic calls. Every now and then, GD will call to let me know they’re thinking of me and see if I need anything. My host, APlus.net does the same.
I’ve had some luck with domains. I got almost $1,000 last year for ThreePieceSuits.com, and I way under-sold CheesePizza.com around the same time. Right now, I’m sitting on some good names like (LinuxCellPhones.com and Secure-Computer.net (both on Sedo). With all the buzz about Google’s progress with Android (http://www.joetech.com/2007/11/28/googles-android-in-action-and-10-million-in-developer-bounty/), I figured someone would have made me an offer for LinuxCellPhones.com by now, but we’ll wait and see.

Hey man,
Glad to see you’ve seen some success from domain reselling. I’m hoping things will turn around for me in that dept. I’ve taken some bad advice and have obviously purchased some dumb domains.
I did pick up quite a few revolving around the subprime mortage meltdown, so we’ll see if anything comes out of that!
Thanks again,
Ryan

Ryan: Anyone who can truly call themselves a “domainer” has picked up some embarrassingly crappy domains. I’ve gotten a lot better about my choices, but I still have some horrible ones due to expire in 2008, if that is any indication. Sometimes you speculate on a future market and it goes nowhere, and sometimes you speculate in the right direction. The key is to sit on a domain idea for a day before buying. Most times it will be there tomorrow.

Personally I think that the Godaddy on-hold “music” is one of the most annoying things I have ever heard. It is jangly and screechy.

@Margaret obviously you have never been on-hold with the best of Kenny G disc spinning.
That is a hell that no one should endure.

True, very true. I’m glad someone pointed this out.
