Biggest Google Slap So Far?

Posted in web by Joe Tech on the October 30th, 2007

We’ve all been reading a lot this month about Google’s updates to Page Rank and how a lot of sites have been adversely affected by this.

After much of the buzz has calmed down, I’ve noticed that it appears Google has slapped my own site, this one, in a strange way.

http://www.joetech.com seems to have been completely removed from Google and my Page Rank of 5 seems to have vanished entirely. Either this is a very strange glitch that will hopefully be resolved very soon, or Google has penalized JoeTech.com in a big way for perhaps one of the following reasons:
- writing positively about Google at times
- being online for over 10 years
- not selling links
- not spamming or submitting my URLs to link farms

What gives, Google? I’m pretty sure I’ve been pretty nice to you and followed the rules.

Wow, that is harsh. Mine went from 4 to 3 to 2 and now 3. Maybe the numbers are just fluttering around and haven’t settled yet. I hope they fix this for you Joe. Good luck.

I think Google Inc is depending on statistical tool for ranking the websites which will average out the fluctuations after considerably long period of time. So I guess your pagerank will increase again in couple of months. But I don’t think selling links or displaying ads is the reason for pagerank reduction.

Could that have been just a temporary blip. A site command ( site:http://www.joetech.com ) on google this morning shows 207 pages listed ( Results 1 – 10 of about 207 from http://www.joetech.com. (0.28 seconds) )

    iphone:

One thing I should clarify. Google still shows all my other pages from this site. It’s just the home page that has vanished.

Try this one in google. It narrows the results down, eliminating most of the sub-pages:
    site:http://www.joetech.com -inurl:2007 -inurl:2006 -inurl:category -inurl:page -inurl:ebay

    Hey Joe,

Just ignore PR – it doesn’t mean all that much.

Although a drop from PR5 – PR0 might indicate a glitch from Google – if traffic goes down then its likely they’ve had a glitch – be worthwhile dropping them an email if that is the case.

If traffic is the same then you have nothing to worry about. While lots of people’s PR has dropped there traffic has stayed the same or gone up.

Nice to see you stop by, Chris. I almost forgot to subscribe to your RSS. I’m not so concerned about PR as just a number. What I’m concerned about is what that number is intended to represent in terms of people finding my site. Ultimately, I am worried that 0 PR for the home page will adversely affect the PR of sub-pages and their page rank. However, I don’t really think I am going to lose any traffic (or sleep) over it.
