APlus.net Uptime Guarantee Fails a DDOS Attack

Posted in Computers by Joe Tech on the September 9th, 2007

For the past year now, I’ve had my sites on a dedicated server over at APlus.net and I’ve been happy with them. Once in a plue moon, I get a phone call trying to sell me on one upgrade or another. It’s not too often and it’s otherwise wonderful bandwidth for a good price. I brag about my dedicated server company and have gotten people to move to them.

I feel pretty stupid.

For the last 35-40 hours, connectivity to my server was sporadic at best. I tried to get to the APlus site for support. No dice. Once in a while, I was lucky enough to get a page to load, but APlus.net’s online support was unavailable. I called and spent over an hour and a half waiting on hold but nobody ever answered. Sometimes, you have to give up and go to bed, so I did. As I lay down to sleep, I decided that I would move to a new provider if the problem still existed in the morning.

This morning, I got up and went straight to my laptop. I was pleased to find that everything seems back in order. But what about next time? Screw me once, shame on you. Screw me twice, shame on me. I find myself wondering if I should just move anyway. This weekend has been a nightmare, especially with the Win My Motorola Q Smartphone!contest here on JoeTech.com and the promotions I’m doing for several new sites. I’ve had a great year with APlus, but I can’t afford downtime like this.

I have an email in to them for a refund, but we’ll see what happens there. In the interim, does anyone have suggestions for a good dedicated server host?

Well, you’ll be happy to hear that 900 of their shared servers just got exploited & will be down for a couple of days .. eek.

I’d recommend checking out http://www.hostjury.com for a new provider. Admittedly, I am involved in HostJury’s development so I’m a tad biased but it’s a great site!

    David,

I received an email from A Plus about the problems they’ve had. I’m honestly looking at moving if I can find something for the right price that will suit my needs. I cringe at the idea of having to move all my sites, though.

Well, from what I hear they’ve had a large amount of their dedicated systems ‘virused’ lately. It isn’t looking good — what sort of budget are you working with?

Migration is definitely a pain in the ass, depending on the control panel in use (I assume plesk) you might get off easy though. cPanel is another panel that ‘migrates’ well to other servers.
