Alexa Gets a Makeover with More Analytics

Posted in web by Joe Colburn on the March 31st, 2009

Today, the traffic statistics site that some say doesn’t count for much, Alexa, stepped up its game. The last time they made a significant change, it involved the way the traffic was interpreted and largely affected the numbers of most sites adversely.

Traffic Details from Alexa

This new update gives the whole site a face lift, but also adds more information about the visitors to a site. While the accuracy of the information delivered is still going to be up for debate, it’s nice to see more of it available and the new look is refreshing. It does make me wonder if everyone will be as pleased about the increased amount of data provided to anyone looking. Do you want everyone to know your bounce rate or average pages viewed per user?

yes all that new info on Alexa is great and i don't know if it really matters that other people can see it. And does anyone even bother to look at other people's stats?

Really- I don't care if my stats info is viewed publicly- I would just like one that gets it right at least 99.9% of the time. I have tried just about every stats site/plugin, you name it- some at the same time- and they always provide different results. As long as people read, and comment once in a great while- I'm doing my job as a blogger. Too many are worried about their stats, they forget one important thing: blogging.

Charlie: I'm also not very concerned about sharing general data like that. If Alexa really wants to compete with Google, they'll need to shoot for more complete data to begin with and then work on providing a more complete offering of metrics.

I was wondering why my FF Alexa add-on wasn't working, this explains it. Alexa's site widgets aren't showing the correct AlexaRank either, but I guess that's to be expected with a complete overhaul like that. I'm not too concerned about people knowing my bounce rate and avg. page views...I've had open SiteMeter analytics for years.

Hey, maybe Alexa is trying to take some users from Google's Analytics service...that would definitely be an uphill battle! :D

Yeah... I actually use that all the time, so I noticed that being broken before I noticed the makeover. Hopefully that will be fixed soon.

I would say they're still working on it-and the coder who came up with the Alexa Sparky add-on for Firefox may need to change a few things. If you click anything from Sparky- you'll either receive a page not found message, or, in some cases, jumbled code in the search area.
