Twestival Helps Feed Phoenix

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

If you’re on Twitter, you may have heard about Twestival by now. if you haven’t here’s the low down. This past February, 200+ cities around the world hosted Twestivals on the same night to help raise money for Charity Water while having a lot of fun. It was a huge success around the world, and it was a lot of fun for me here in Phoenix. Over $250,000 was raised in one night just from those of us who live 140 characters at a time. Some time later, I was pleased to find in my email links to videos of wells being dug with the money raised. Given the large scale success, Twestival planning was again under way.

Twestival Phoenix

The event and sponsors
I’ve been wanting to get more involved with events locally and just getting out more and meeting people, so when the opportunity to volunteer was recognized, I jumped right in. Honestly, I didn’t really do all that much because there were so many other people just running with it and making things happen, but it was nice to pitch in where I could.

When I say people ran with it, I mean they really made this event great. The organizers and other volunteers brought in a ton of great raffle items and an almost unmanageable amount of silent auction items. They brought in some wonderful sponsors like the Phoenix Suns, CBS Outdoor, and Joe’s Real BBQ, just to name a few. When the sponsors gave, they really gave from the heart. Not only did some of them help cater the event, but they threw in some great give-aways on top of it. One of the big sponsors of the evening, Infusionsoft is no stranger to Twestival. After making a $1,000 donation to help with the event in February, they stepped up with another $1,000 again. And from what I understand, the aloft Hotel provided the space for free. The hotel was very nice, by the way.

The raffle and silent auction
Twestival PhoenixFor the event, I bought a Gold Donation package, which included 5 raffle tickets and I bought another 5 tickets just to make a nice even 10. During the second raffle, I won twice. The first time, I won a gift package from Oregano’s Pizza. In a (clean) pizza box, I found a $25 gift card, lots of coupons, and two Oregano’s t-shirts. I can always use t-shirts, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with a free meal. Next, I won two gift cards to Joe’s Real BBQ totaling $30. I hadn’t head of them before Twestival, and I have no idea why. They helped cater and when I tried the BBQ it was great, but the beans were phenomenal. I’m excited to make use of these prizes. Lots of other people also looked very pleased with their prizes from the raffle. After all, how often do you get to mingle with all these cool people for a small donation and then walk away with prizes, including bags of coffee, lots of gift cards, hats, and other fun stuff.

Twestival PhoenixFor some of us, the silent auction was just as exciting. Items included web services, photography, artwork, landscaping (which someone got a steal on big time), box seats, an autographed Leandro Barbosa jersey, and so much more I can’t even mention it all here. Before I even left the office, I had my sights set on that Barbosa jersey. I was the second bidder with an easy $70 bid. Later in the evening, it was announced that there was only a couple minutes left on the silent auctions, so I headed back and saw a few more bids after mine. I got my bid in at the last possible second and am now the proud owner of the jersey. It’ll look great framed up in my office.

The people
Although it may not seem like it online, I can be pretty shy in person until someone approaches and strikes up a conversation. It was pretty fortunate, then, that I wound up meeting and having good conversations with @cinimod, @nickhammond, and others. It was good to see again and meet anew people like @chrislee, @aussieheather (and her brother), @MsHerr, @JennyCarnie, @PHXated, @Georgie_Phx and anyone I might have missed. I had a blast and everyone I encountered helped that happen in some small way.

The charity
St Mary's Food Bank logoAfter a lot of thoughtful discussion and weighing all the factors, St Mary’s Food Bank was chosen as the charity we would all come together for tonight. They provide thousands of meals consistently throughout Phoenix and have been around for as long as I can remember. Can you imagine a single Twestival standard donation of $20 goes to provide 140 meals? I will never look at a $20 bill the same way again. It’s an amazing charity and I’m glad I could be there to help give.

So in summary, the night was awesome, the people were great, the charity is worthy and the event was a huge success. I’m excited to be a part of the next one early next year and hope to see some of you there.

Poke Some Fun At Yourself With The Spoonjuice Fun Booth iPhone App

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

I got my hands on another iPhone application to help me waste away a long Labor Day weekend. It’s called Fun Booth and it’s from a company called Spoonjuice. The idea is that it’s like a fun photo booth where you can add props to your photo like those funny glasses with a mustache and bushy eye brows.

What I liked
Well, there’s the obvious time wasting fun to be had. It’s another thing you can load up when you’re with a bunch of friends and want to take turns laughing at yourselves and each other. It’s pretty amusing by yourself, too, but I think it’s better for group fun. There’s a bunch of different props to choose from and you can resize them as needed to fit the subject’s face. I uploaded a bunch of my Fun Booth photos to my Flickr account here.

Fun BoothI also liked the integration with Twitter and Flickr. Sure, I could save the photo and use another app to upload it, but this just saves me a step. The image to the right is one that I simply uploaded to Flickr right from the Fun Booth app. I sent the same image to Twitter as a test, too. If you’re not interested in either of those, you can also email the image to yourself or someone else or save it as a contact. They covered several bases in regards to the ability to share your creations.

What I didn’t like
Unfortunately, I found some things that I think could use some improvement, as well. While it’s good to have the Twitter, Flickr, email and contacts integration, they forgot one key option, and that is the ability to just save your photo unless you want to create a new one. This means that if I had to search through the hundreds of photos in my album or worse, line up and take the perfect head shot, I have to do that again every time I want to save a photo. Another thing I thought was missing was the ability to select a specific prop. The app has a button to randomize the prop, but not a list to select one, so if you want to get to a specific prop, you have to keep randomizing until it comes up.

Conclusions
I do have a couple gripes that make the app a little less easy to use. I would also like to see the ability to add more than one prop at the same time. Currently, you can accomplish this by saving the photo and using it as your next photo, though. The bottom line is the price. There’s a lot of junk apps in the app store for $0.99 but this isn’t one of them. At the 99 cent price, this is a unique application that is worth its price tag if you get even just an hour of fun out of it, though I hope to see at least a prop selection list in the next update.

And now for some boolmarks.

The Underground Motel – In Australia, there’s an underground city called Coober Pedy and you can stay there in this underground motel. It looks pretty cool.

Mars fly-by – We keep getting better and better photos of the surface of mars. Some of these are just incredible.

Bob McFerrin Hacks Your Brain – Not as amazing as it sounds, but this video shows how easy it is to manipulate and train the mind.

Awesome Transformer Halloween Costume – This is what I want to be for Halloween.

Facial Recognition – I’m playing with this software I found while reviewing a netbook.

HDR Images Tutorial – This guide shows how simple it is to make HDR images like I made here and here.

Glow in the Dark Stick Men Dance – Great concept and well executed.

Microprocessor Runs On Thin Air – While not exactly practical (at least for now), this truly defines thinking outside of the box.

Missing Google O Solved – On Friday, Google posted this tweet about their mysterious new logo image, which of course translates to “all your o are belong to us”, a reference to the opening line and hugely viral video from the 80′s game, Zero Wing. Turns out that it’s the 20th anniversary of the game’s release. Google just earned some more cool points.

RoyalTutorial – One of my advertisers, Zac Johnson launched a new blog to provide Photoshop tutorials and it looks great!

i-Swarm – Tiny robots that interact with each other and light? Truly awesome.

Trade Wars Lives! – In the 80′s, before we were all able to play on the Internet, we played on Bulletin Board Systems and on these systems, there was a game called Trade Wars. It was a great game and I had it installed on my own BBS. It seems it’s still alive and kicking on the internet. Geek nostalgia for the win.

TED Talk : Wireless Electricity – I love some of the TED Talks and I’m thrilled about the concept of wireless electricity, so I was happy to find this.
