Peta.com : “PETA, YOUR ONE STOP FUR SHOP”

Monday, August 27th, 2007

According to Archive.org, Peta.com didn’t always promote the “ethical treatment of animals”. In fact, on December 21, 1996, Peta.com read (in part):

We have just been informed that Bambi was not killed by Godzilla. Bambi was actually removed from the forest by a member of the group EARTHFIRST and sold to a lab run by the group ACTUP to be used for animal testing. The ACLU sued Godzilla for wrongful death. We will keep you informed.

Peta.com in 1996

Of course, the page was down a month later and by November, 1997, Peta had the domain in their possession. I would have loved to see the exchange between this guy and Peta’s legal department in January, 1997.

Clippy Kicks Shuffle’s Ass. Who Will Win?

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Every time Apple comes out with a new (or revised) product, a few jump to the challenge of trying to defeat the giant. Since the birth of the original iPod, we’ve seen plenty of would-be David’s easily brushed aside by Goliath. Could this time be different? Although Apple has a strong foothold in the personal audio player market, they may need to answer this challenge. I’m an iPod nano owner and I’m swaying. Watch out, Apple.

From Gizmodo:

Available in both 1GB and 2GB varieties the storage size is standard in the field, what is not standard is the inclusion of an FM radio, OLED screen, voice recorder and a more than reasonable 15 hour battery life. Playback formats supported will be MP3 and WMA only, but at $40 (1GB) and $60 (2GB), what are you complaining about? The small guy with big tricks is set for a September debut in those fun colours of black, red, blue and our favourite, pink.

TubeCast: Merging YouTube with How We Watch TV

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

TubeCast.tv bills itself as a “not-for-profit web experiment”. It seems greatness often comes from one or two guys with a vision and some creative talent.

TubeCast.tv

When you get to the opening page, you’re told to “turn on, tune in, chill out”. OK. I can live with that. Below the slogan is an elegant power button begging to be clicked. Below the button is the word “alpha” looming like a warning. I’m feeling brave today, so I clicked and held my breath.

Without any searching, looking for “hot” videos of the day, or fumbling about, I’m watching Jessica Simpson on roller skates. Not my first pick, but that’s not a problem. TubeCast includes an overlay on the video, showing the schedule of things to come, and I can skip ahead. Still, nothing looks interesting to me. About to give up, I notice that I can change channels. Aha! I find the “BBC Comedy” channel, which I choose as I’m already watching BBC America on my “real” TV in the background. The wait is dreadful. It’s 10 minutes later, and I’m still waiting.

While there’s some glitches to work out, TubeCast definitely shows a lot of promise and appears eager to please. I’ll be watching and you should too.

Finally! Unbrick Your PSP

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

When I had a Sony PSP, I was jumping on just about every mod and hack. I wanted to push it to its limits. The only thing I feared was the dreadful possibility that one of my hacks would “brick” the device, leaving it unusable. Eventually, I sold it because I just didn’t use it much and had hacked it to the point that I became bored. Had this been available when I still had my PSP, I may have never sold it, taking advantage of all the possible hacks there were to come.

Finally, there’s an easy way to unbrick that dead PSP and get hacking again in minutes. Take a look at the video proof below.
