X Prize: American Idol for Geeks

X Prize

FACING down stiff competition to win fame and big prize money? Forget singing for Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul. Try sequencing DNA for a panel of technology investors.

Yes, something like an “American Idol” for the technorati may be coming to Silicon Valley.

Venture capital firms are considering contests that offer competing engineers and entrepreneurs multimillion-dollar prize purses if they come up with innovative technologies in various industries.

I would love to see this happening. VCs will get a better return on their cash, and it will inspire a lot more forward thinking than we have today.

Sendori: No more parked pages

Thursday, February 15th, 2007

SendoriSendori is a newly launched service that most of us will never see – and they could make sure we don’t end up seeing web pages defiled by the putrid stench of domain squatters either. That’s the most charitable way to look at this very interesting Sunyvale company. Sendori will auction off redirects from parked domains through their servers and to sponsored advertiser pages.

The idea is that “domain portfolio holders,” as they are called in polite company, aren’t effectively able to monetize their domains right now with AdSense or other ads placed on those domains. Sendori believes that conversion rates are much higher when visitors are directed to a page with a single vendor’s recognized brand than it is on a page full of ads. That makes sense to me.

MeemPool.com PR4 web site for sale: $75

Thursday, February 15th, 2007

I still have a bunch of great domain names for $75, but I’ve also decided to list one of my sites. 2007 will be my year to focus on just a handful of sites, so watch for a couple more I’ll post soon.

Here’s the goods:

http://www.afternic.com/name.php?domain=MeemPool.com

Details:
- Site is at http://www.meempool.com
- Site contents are auto-updated via user submission
- There are over 30,000 links in the system.
- The traffic is low and I don’t have time to really promote this and then maintain it when the traffic comes, but the site is built already, so all you have to do is get it some more traffic.

I have about 15 sites at the moment and I plan to get that down to around 10 or less so I can focus on making what I have better. So, again, I’ll be dropping a few sites on Afternic for $75. Stay tuned.

OpenMoko open source linux cell phone

OpenMoko is an open source, linux-based cell phone. The Wiki site is still being filled in with information, but here are some highlights:

- 64MB Samsung NAND flash (K9F1208U0B) attached to S3C2410 NAND controller.
- 128MB SDRAM (2x Samsung K4M511633C) attached to S3C2410 SDRAM controller
- The GSM/GPRS modem is Texas Instruments Calypso based.
- Hammerhead AGPS from Global Locate.
- The Neo1973 has one microSD aka Transflash slot.
- 2.8″ 480×640 toppoly (tpo) TD028TTEC1 module, using a Toshiba JBT6K74 TFT LCD Driver Chipset.
- Touchscreen connected to a S3C2410 TS controller
- Bluetooth: Delta DFBM-CS320 Class2 Module, using CSR BlueCore4

This is a hell of an open source project and I can’t wait to see some of the results that come from it.

The open source cell ringtones sources are making new marks in the industry of mobile graphic and audio amusements. The online resources offer the consumers the sweetest polyphonic ringtones for nominal charges and some hackers set themselves out to sneak a way to generate the superb nextel ringtones for themselves. The ringtones providers keep their base ringtone database up to date with a new ringtone upload every minute.
